Kennestone is especially well known for minimally-invasive surgery, and the city of Marietta itself has a place in the history of minimally-invasive surgery. The first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the US was performed on June 22, 1988 in a small building that still stands across the street from Kennestone Hospital. Since that time Marietta has been synonymous with cutting edge minimally-invasive surgery.
Today there are many surgeons at Kennestone who are leaders in their fields, and who regularly teach other surgeons and present their techniques at national and international meetings.
Kennestone has a long and rich history and a strong relationship with the local community. WellStar is very active in sponsoring various events and endeavors around the area, including the womens professional soccer team, the Atlanta Beat.
Kennestone Hospital has been growing rapidly in the past 15 years. Additions have included a Women's Center, a new OR, a new wing that houses our Cardiac Surgery OR and recovery units, a new Outpatient Surgery Pavilion, as well as many other upgrades and modernizations which are always in progress. Another new wing is currently under construction that will further expand and upgrade the capabilities and facilities of the hospital.
The new Main Entrance Lobby, pictured to the right and in the picture just above, is another one of the beautiful additions that have been made to the hospital in recent years. This Lobby allows a greatly improved ease of getting in and out of the hospital for patients and families, with a large circular drive for drop-off and pick-up.

We have a hospital ward that is designated for our bariatric patients. Our nurses have training in the care of bariatric patients. We are proud to have achieved and maintained the Center of Excellence designation from the SRC and the ASMBS since 2005.
